What exactly is Shared Hosting?

If you want to put a website online, you’ll need a server to host the site’s content and distribute it to visitors. While some people use their own servers, it is also common to use a hosting provider such as SiteGround, A2 or Host Papa.

Is Shared Web Hosting the Best Option for You?

If you need to get your new website up and running quickly, shared web hosting may appear to be the most practical option. It’s the most cost-effective way to host a website, with users able to get started for as little as a few dollars per month.

However, shared hosting plans have some significant limitations that you should carefully consider before investing in a new hosting plan.

Of course, the primary benefit of shared web hosting plans is their low cost. SiteGround, for example, offers a starter shared hosting plan for $2.99 per month when you commit to 12 months, as an introductory offer.

Aside from pricing, shared hosting plans have lower entry barriers than other types of web hosting. Your provider will manage the server and give you access to a dedicated control panel where you can manage your account, site, and other things.

Meanwhile, dedicated servers typically provide users with root access, enabling them to manage all aspects of their web hosting. This gives you complete control over your website, but it also requires significantly more work and far more technical skills. If you do not want to be responsible for the technical aspects of your hosting arrangement, shared web hosting is usually more convenient.

Another disadvantage of shared web hosting is its unpredictability, especially for large sites or sites that receive a high volume of traffic. Your provider will limit your resource utilisation, and you may be charged extra or experience longer load times if you exceed their allotment.

With that in mind, the limitations of shared web hosting can be either a benefit or a detriment depending on your circumstances. You won’t have as much access to resources, but you’ll be able to pay for what you need rather than spending more money on a dedicated server

How to Begin With Shared Web Hosting

How to Begin With Shared Web Hosting

If you want to use shared web hosting, the next step is to find a provider that meets your needs and upload your site to their servers. Whether you’re using web hosting for the first time or switching from an existing plan, you should be able to get started quickly and easily by following the setup instructions provided by your provider. While the specifics may differ from one provider to the next, the process will be largely the same regardless of the platform you use.

We’ll go over everything you need to know to find your first web host or a new provider to switch to in the following section. While we’ll go over some of the most important things to look for in a web hosting provider, our provider comparison is a great place to go for more information on specific platforms.

If you don't have a web host, do the following:

The first step in setting up shared web hosting is deciding which provider you want to work with. It’s impossible to make a blanket recommendation because the best shared hosting provider for you will be determined by the requirements of your website.

Most shared hosting plans are reasonably priced, so you won’t have to break the bank to get dependable performance. However, keep in mind that the listed prices frequently come with a catch.

Uptime, customer support, scalability, disc space and bandwidth limits, and ease of use are other factors to consider when choosing a shared hosting provider. Your service provider will guide you through the process of creating your new website.

Some hosts, such as Squarespace and Wix, include a website builder, whereas others only provide stand-alone hosting. Some stand-alone hosts make it simple to use third-party website builders. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Magento, Wiki, and phpBB, for example, can be installed with a single click on SiteGround.

If you don't have a web host, do the following:
Making the Switch to Shared Web Hosting

Making the Switch to Shared Web Hosting

If you’re changing hosting providers, you’ll need to migrate your website to the new provider. Fortunately, the process isn’t as difficult as it appears. Most web hosting companies provide free migration assistance, so you won’t be responsible for the actual migration.

It should be noted that automatic migration is not required to set up a new hosting plan. Manual migrations are possible in a few simple steps, and there is little to no risk of major problems if you back up your files first. If you want to run your migration, our guide to switching web hosting providers is a great place to start.

In summary, manually migrating a website entails downloading the site’s database and files, modifying them to fit the new provider, and uploading them to the new host. Of course, in practise, it’s more complicated, which is why you should always backup your entire site before any migration.

Users switching from another hosting plan should ensure that the new one meets their requirements. If you switch to a plan with lower bandwidth limits, for example, you may notice a significant decrease in performance. Similarly, if you’d prefer to leave the migration to the pros, look for a hosting plan that includes free automatic migration from your current provider.

Other Types of Web Hosting vs. Shared Web Hosting

Because the server is shared by multiple users, things like maintenance, setup, and configuration are typically handled by the provider.

Shared web hosting, as the name implies, allows multiple users to share the same server. Providers typically limit each user’s access to server resources to ensure that the server remains accessible to all users. Even though you will be sharing those resources with other sites, providers generally take precautions to ensure that they do not negatively impact your performance.

Because the server is shared by multiple users, things like maintenance, setup, and configuration are typically handled by the provider. Instead of setting up your own server, you can leave the technical aspects of hosting to your provider and easily manage your site through the built-in control panel. Furthermore, shared hosting plans frequently include 24/7 customer support to answer any questions or resolve any technical issues.

Dedicated server plans, on the other hand, provide an entire server for a single website. Because dedicated servers aren’t shared with anyone else, they generally provide a higher level of control than shared hosting plans. Of course, those benefits raise the cost of dedicated hosting significantly, which is why many small businesses prefer shared hosting.

With that in mind, there is no correct or incorrect answer when it comes to shared web hosting vs. other hosting options. While shared hosting is ideal for some businesses, it is impossible to recommend it for every scenario. It’s critical to find a hosting plan that fits your company’s specific budget and requirements.

In addition to shared and dedicated web hosting, virtual private server (VPS) hosting is a popular choice. VPS hosting still divides server resources between your site and other users, but instead of sharing the same server instance, each user gets their own virtualized server.

Dividing the physical server into multiple virtual instances eliminates the need to share resources, potentially leading to faster site speeds and less downtime. In other words, whereas shared server arrangements place all users on the same server with access to the same pool of resources, VPS hosting gives you a clearly defined portion of those resources as well as more control over your virtual server.

Simple to use and help is easy to find

Aside from pricing, shared hosting plans have lower entry barriers than other types of web hosting. Your provider will manage the server and give you access to a dedicated control panel where you can manage your account, site, and other things.

  1. Great Support

    DC M

Every time I've had a problem I've had excellent support at any time of the day or night and the problem always solved. The groups that the website supported have disbanded so we are letting the hosting and then the domain names expire otherwise we would still be using your services. If anyone ever asks for a recommendation for hosting and domain services I will always tell them to use Siteground. I've never had better support anywhere else.

  2. Yordan's Customer Service Is Next Level

    Julie

Well, Yordan made all of the difference for me with his customer service. He went above and beyond to find a solution to my problem. Because the issue was related to Gmail - and Gmail pulling over emails I didn't want from Siteground - he could have just told me that the problem was with Gmail... which it was. However, he came up with a creative, out of the box solution so that I could integrate my siteground emails into gmail without importing 4500 unnecessary emails. This literally saved me hundreds of hours of trying to clean up the data. You're so lucky to have Yordan on the team and going the extra mail for your customers. He deserves a raise and a bonus :) Thanks, Siteground!

  2. Worst Hosting Provider Ever!!

    Omar N

Worst hosting provider ever, I am a user since 2016 starting with shared hosting and then planned to grow so I choose the largest VPS plan, first year was calm but after renewing my plan error starts appearing! Now, I am contacting ipage.com support chat from 6 months without any real solution, add to that i have to explain to them the issue each time. 504,502 is keep appearing frequently and they keep throwing this issue to any other reason except them! I could agree with them that this issue is because of my poor site developing but what if the same issue appearing on all the site at the same moment even the sites that have a fresh copy of WordPress without any extra plugins, CDN or security plugin! every time they are keeps saying that your sites working fine and there are no errors logs while I checked that with many developer from different countries and all of them said that the VPS is not stable. After all of this, I asked for refund but they ignored for sure with a silly reasons. it is a SCAM! you really should take care and don't waste your money here as you gonna pay twice.*Update* After they ask for my information, nothing changed at and they not even contact me.

  1. Bad online suport menus

    Kathy S

I purchased my domain name and 2 weeks later went to sign up for hosting and begin building my web site. Imagine my dismay when I was told by the help desk that I could not access the help menus (error404) until I had a web host set up. Talk about a catch 22! I will be transferring this domain to GoDaddy after the 60 day registeration period ends. What a terrible experience with the live voice support. Fortunately the chat line rep gave me the much needed inforamtion to at least proceed forward today

  2. Incompetence reigns large. Support can read but can't troubleshoot if it's not what you already read.

    Heidi P

The ppl are kind but incompetent when it comes to email setup. They are simply reading the same thing I am. I had already tried that and told them I needed more support than that. I called 8 times -- and had 1 chat -- all were ridiculous until the last guy who actually figured out how to set up my Outlook because I already have another Exchange email. I had to call so many times that I figured out how to set up the iphone on my own after multiple failures. The support ppl do not actually provide SUPPORT other than what you can read on their site which wasn't working for me. They were nice -- but incompetent. I waited for a supervisor twice and finally hung up after 30-40 mins. I also got disconnected 2x by a support person (2 different ppl) and another time I could hear a rooster crowing in the background. Seriously? I understand ppl can be anywhere but hang ups and distractions for customer support are not ok. Domain.com sucks. They did not deliver. I asked for a discount MULTIPLE times but clearly no one on the team is authorized. What a mess. I will move my domain in 2 years when it's up but I'm stuck for now bec I needed email immediately. It's the only reason I'm staying. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
