What exactly is WordPress?

WordPress, at its core, is the simplest and most popular way to create your own website or blog. WordPress, in fact, powers 43.3% of all websites on the Internet. Yes, WordPress is likely to power more than one out of every four websites you visit.

WordPress is an open-source content management system licenced under the GPLv2, which means that anyone can use or modify the WordPress software for free.

A content management system (CMS) is essentially a tool that allows you to manage important aspects of your website, such as content, without having to know anything about programming.

As a result, WordPress makes website creation accessible to anyone in Sri Lanka – even those who aren’t developers.

What Types of Websites Can WordPress Produce?

WordPress was once primarily used to create blogs, rather than more traditional websites. That hasn’t been the case in a long time. You can now create any type of website with WordPress thanks to changes to the core code and WordPress’ massive ecosystem of plugins and themes.

WordPress, for example, not only powers a large number of business sites and blogs, but it is also the most popular way to create an eCommerce store! WordPress allows you to create:

Websites for businesses
Online stores
Blogs
Portfolios
Resumes
Forums
Social networking sites, membership websites…

Almost anything else you can think of…

What Is the Distinction Between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?

WordPress.org, also known as self-hosted WordPress, is the free, open-source WordPress software that you can instal on your own web host to create a completely unique website.

WordPress.com is a for-profit, subscription-based service that runs on the WordPress.org software. It’s easy to use, but you lose a lot of the flexibility that comes with self-hosted WordPress.

When most people say “WordPress,” they are referring to the self-hosted WordPress available at WordPress.org. Self-hosted WordPress.org is almost always the best option if you want to truly own your website.

To get started with self-hosted WordPress, you simply need to purchase web hosting and a domain name.

Who Invented WordPress, and How Long Has It Been in Existence?

WordPress was founded in 2003 as a stand-alone project as an offshoot of a previous project known as b2/cafelog.

Because WordPress is open-source software, it is now created by a large community of contributors. But, if we go all the way back to the beginning, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little worked together to create WordPress.

Matt Mullenweg has largely become the face of WordPress since then. He is also the founder of Automattic, the company that operates the for-profit WordPress.com service.

Between its inception as a blog platform in 2003 and today, WordPress has had a long history…

But, suffice to say, WordPress has progressed and, thanks to its contributors and large community, has become the most popular solution for creating any type of website.

What are the benefits of using WordPress?

There are numerous reasons to use WordPress regardless of the type of website you want to build. Here are a few examples:

WordPress is a free and open source platform.

One of the most significant advantages of WordPress is that it is free, open-source software. While you must pay for hosting, you will never have to pay to use the WordPress software, which is not the case with alternatives such as Squarespace.

Aside from that, there are numerous open-source plugins and themes available to alter the appearance and functionality of your website. Speaking of which….

WordPress is adaptable.

Even if you are not a developer, you can easily modify your website thanks to the vast ecosystem of WordPress themes and plugins:

Themes primarily alter the appearance of your website.

Plugins primarily alter how your website operates. Plugins can be as simple as a contact form or as complex as creating an eCommerce store.

There are currently over 50,000 free WordPress plugins and 5,000 free WordPress themes available, as well as a plethora of premium options. That is to say, you have a lot of options! Here is a selection of the best WordPress plugins.

WordPress is simple to set up.

Do you believe you must be a computer genius to create your own website? Consider again! WordPress can be installed on your site with a few mouse clicks.

Is it possible to instal WordPress on my personal computer?

Absolutely! There are several compelling reasons why you should instal WordPress on a local computer. You are creating a new website from scratch, installing a new theme or plugin, or simply want a safe environment to experiment with your existing website without fear of breaking it.

In this case, we recommend DevKinsta, a free tool that allows you to instal WordPress on your Mac or PC.

WordPress is adaptable.

We’ve already mentioned it, but WordPress is great because it allows you to create almost any type of website. Even better, your website can evolve alongside you.

Do you want to add a forum to your current WordPress site? No worries – simply instal the bbPress plugin! Do you want to include a social network? Not to worry! Simply instal the BuddyPress plugin.

You are never confined to a single set of functions; you can always adapt and evolve.

The Technical Support Staff at a2hosting are awesome. I've always had the pleasure of dealing staff that are clear, detailed, prompt and courteous which goes a long way if your site is down or encountering problems installing a script. I've not had any regrets moving from a different webhost where fast servers and maximum uptimes were promised but had deceptive pricing. At a2hosting.com, however, you're in great hands especially with the recent upgrades that has not affected my costs so essentially better service at the same great price. They are highly recommended so Don't miss out!

After my email went down due to suspicious activity from a third party, the tech people from Hostpapa quickly and efficiently go me back up and running again. I could not be happier with the service and follow up service from the staff at Hostpapa.
Host Papa is top of the pops for me
Michael F
I have been a host papa user for many years and as a business user who relies on their web site as a shop front, l have no complaints at all. In fact in this day and age to say my last 10 years has been completely positive is something of a milestone. I find the customer service particularly reassuring, questions are answered quickly and you can phone, chat or email all being a breeze to use. I will never change my web hosting to anyone else, and have no problem in giving them the full five stars.

Deceptive, Unethical , Faked Reviews , Not To Be Trusted !
Dee
They fraudently advertise premium websites as regular websites, and do not refund your money even if they are at fault. Had to be escalated to my credit card issuer which was extremely protracted and difficult. They claim to have a "cancel subscription" option , and a "delete credit card" option on the accounts, but clearly both are blatantly missing. Again, another deceptive borderline scam tactic to deliberately make it difficult for customers to cancel their subscription.99% of their positive reviews are faked, having only 1 only review per account ! Absolutely do not trust these conmen.
