What exactly is WordPress?

WordPress, at its core, is the simplest and most popular way to create your own website or blog. WordPress, in fact, powers 43.3% of all websites on the Internet. Yes, WordPress is likely to power more than one out of every four websites you visit.

WordPress is an open-source content management system licenced under the GPLv2, which means that anyone can use or modify the WordPress software for free.

A content management system (CMS) is essentially a tool that allows you to manage important aspects of your website, such as content, without having to know anything about programming.

As a result, WordPress makes website creation accessible to anyone in Delaware – even those who aren’t developers.

What Types of Websites Can WordPress Produce?

WordPress was once primarily used to create blogs, rather than more traditional websites. That hasn’t been the case in a long time. You can now create any type of website with WordPress thanks to changes to the core code and WordPress’ massive ecosystem of plugins and themes.

WordPress, for example, not only powers a large number of business sites and blogs, but it is also the most popular way to create an eCommerce store! WordPress allows you to create:

  • Websites for businesses
  • Online stores
  • Blogs
  • Portfolios
  • Resumes
  • Forums
  • Social networking sites, membership websites…

Almost anything else you can think of…

What Is the Distinction Between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?

WordPress.org, also known as self-hosted WordPress, is the free, open-source WordPress software that you can instal on your own web host to create a completely unique website.

WordPress.com is a for-profit, subscription-based service that runs on the WordPress.org software. It’s easy to use, but you lose a lot of the flexibility that comes with self-hosted WordPress.

When most people say “WordPress,” they are referring to the self-hosted WordPress available at WordPress.org. Self-hosted WordPress.org is almost always the best option if you want to truly own your website.

To get started with self-hosted WordPress, you simply need to purchase web hosting and a domain name.

Who Invented WordPress, and How Long Has It Been in Existence?

WordPress was founded in 2003 as a stand-alone project as an offshoot of a previous project known as b2/cafelog.

Because WordPress is open-source software, it is now created by a large community of contributors. But, if we go all the way back to the beginning, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little worked together to create WordPress.

Matt Mullenweg has largely become the face of WordPress since then. He is also the founder of Automattic, the company that operates the for-profit WordPress.com service.

Between its inception as a blog platform in 2003 and today, WordPress has had a long history…

But, suffice to say, WordPress has progressed and, thanks to its contributors and large community, has become the most popular solution for creating any type of website.

What are the benefits of using WordPress?

There are numerous reasons to use WordPress regardless of the type of website you want to build. Here are a few examples:

WordPress is a free and open source platform.

One of the most significant advantages of WordPress is that it is free, open-source software. While you must pay for hosting, you will never have to pay to use the WordPress software, which is not the case with alternatives such as Squarespace.

Aside from that, there are numerous open-source plugins and themes available to alter the appearance and functionality of your website. Speaking of which….

WordPress is adaptable.

Even if you are not a developer, you can easily modify your website thanks to the vast ecosystem of WordPress themes and plugins:

Themes primarily alter the appearance of your website.

Plugins primarily alter how your website operates. Plugins can be as simple as a contact form or as complex as creating an eCommerce store.

There are currently over 50,000 free WordPress plugins and 5,000 free WordPress themes available, as well as a plethora of premium options. That is to say, you have a lot of options! Here is a selection of the best WordPress plugins.

WordPress is simple to set up.

Do you believe you must be a computer genius to create your own website? Consider again! WordPress can be installed on your site with a few mouse clicks.

Is it possible to instal WordPress on my personal computer?

Absolutely! There are several compelling reasons why you should instal WordPress on a local computer. You are creating a new website from scratch, installing a new theme or plugin, or simply want a safe environment to experiment with your existing website without fear of breaking it.

In this case, we recommend DevKinsta, a free tool that allows you to instal WordPress on your Mac or PC.

WordPress is adaptable.

We’ve already mentioned it, but WordPress is great because it allows you to create almost any type of website. Even better, your website can evolve alongside you.

Do you want to add a forum to your current WordPress site? No worries – simply instal the bbPress plugin! Do you want to include a social network? Not to worry! Simply instal the BuddyPress plugin.

You are never confined to a single set of functions; you can always adapt and evolve.

  1. SiteGround is Amazing and Affordable

    Marie I

I transferred from GoDaddy.com I had a well established site I thought moving to GoDaddy would be beneficial. I moved to GoDaddy in July of 2022 I encountered numerous problems with more expenses but no resolutions. One week with Siteground problems are actually fixed and my site has traffic again. I am formally disputing the $300 that GoDaddy insisted I had to spend to fix an established site. SiteGround is amazing for significantly less money.

  2. SiteGround technical support is… amazing

    Catherine H

SiteGround technical support is amazing. For example today Boyana walked me through a complicated (for me) and annoying task in which I was pretty clueless. She was patient, and at every point she both linked a tutorial page and also walked me through the steps. I was able to accomplish the task of getting my website download going in fifteen minutes instead of half a day. I love SiteGround.

  1. Was having lots of trouble setting up…

    Tom M

Was having lots of trouble setting up my new domain's email through Google Workspace. So I reached out through the chat and it was Shravya to the rescue! They were most helpful and guided me through every facet, before ultimately taking over and finishing things for me when I kept getting stuck! Cannot say enough nice things about their patience and if I could recommend you only talk to Shravya and find a way to get them directly to solve all your problems, I would most certainly do so. Super helpful. Incredibly patient with my lack of skills, and very quick in resolving my issues. Absolutely top notch! Thank you, Shravya!!!! You were awesome!!!

  2. Thank you so much for your great help

    Hassan

Thank you so much for your great help, Your support was very helpful and I honestly didnt expect this kind attitude from customer support online, I usually dont get such practical and helpful support from online websites. Thank you again and keep going full support.

  1. UPDATED: VPS Boosting to F rating and offline server

    JB

Further update: Following the comment left by A2. Issues have continued, site is still not near pre-transfer speeds even with paying x5 more for this service. On my own, even though this is a managed VPS, I located an alarming RAM usage issue. Reported to A2, who informed me the server logging reports were switched off for some reason. Told to wait a few hours. I have waited a few days, no reply. 3 more calls to A2. Told someone is on it, 24 hours ago. Gone and passed no one has been on the site from A2 in 3 days. My previous review, sparked an email which basically went one by one telling me whos fault each issue was, rather than addressing the actual overall issue here. I have been told to PAY more to Litespeed their selected optimisation tool for the CDN and image optimisation credits. So the advertised turbo server, actually requires you to PAY more for the server to be optimised fully. No where is this stated. My site with this new CDN is loading without images on first load, and double flashing. All i get over and over is 'sorry for the inconvenience'. It is clear to me, A2 hosting have given up and do not hold either the want or ability or resource to resolve this mess. Which its me and my business that suffers financially. I do not suspect I will get any further in the next few hours, after requesting a timeline and plan for sorting this. As well as the main user profile that is now somehow corrupted. (which support just said, ive never seen this before....)Thousands of £ lost in revenue from a complete drop off of SEO work on google rankings. Weeks worth of embarrassment with a glitching painfully dial up speed slow site. All our original optimisations undone. Money spent in time, energy and opportunity cost for trying to get A2 to resolve. I am giving up. Will be transferring away.Again, I would not advice anyone risks their business website transfer and hosting to A2, it has been shambolic and negligent at best. Well glad to see I am not the only one.But for VPS managed this has been a nightmare. We are day 8 into transferring over from Siteground, who I never had an issue with in the years we were with them, but we needed more speed. It has been a complete nightmare and continues to be. 1. They do not start the transfer when requested so we faced a day out of business.2. Ongoing non-stop issues with emails going down, not sending, not loading into inbox.3.Optimisation team, when they actually respond, have optimised our site down to a consistent F rating.4. we have lost 50% of our keywords on google due to this5. Site gets a database corruption and goes down, no one can tell me why or update me6. I have spent the last week 50% of my time day and night on to support trying to get answer or issues resolved.7.Virus scanner doesnt work on the site8.They have caused Hotlinking image issues with 3rd party plug ins like omnisend to appear.9. My site keeps getting broken (when its up) by the teams trying to optimise it10. Incorrect information, or contradictory information11. No accountability or ownership12. New support person every reply telling me to be patient13. £1000s in lost revenue from sit bounce rate and loss of rankings14. I keep getting asked for the same information over and over and over15. Will not escalate when asked16. Do not reply timely or prioritise critical issues17. I have been gaslit by their support task saying its not A2....... right so all this happend by chance when we started to transition?18. We have lost 100s of leads this week due to winning an award but not having a site functioning to convert from it19. Spent another few hundred on my phone bill calling the states to try and resolve.20. I could continue.....Absolutely shambolic, couldn't organise their way out of a paper bag. Cannot communicate or give any expectation. Its literally a nightmare. I am stuff with my domain transferring or I would have reversed back to siteground. Looks like a second weekend without an operational site going into online busiest period. I will be bankrupt end of the month at this rate. AVOID !!!!

  2. What Happend to Acceptable Enterprise Level Support?

    jfn482

I moved my clients website (wealth management - 100mil managed assets) to A2 from inferior hosting and management. The support with the migration went pretty well and we bought a years worth of hosting. Support seems to have taken a complete nosedive afterwards. Got (Syed) on tech chat support because any ticket support seems non existent. This is for issue of a downed site. First Syed says hold on while I prepare notes of your issue? After several prompts he comes back and says, we are very busy on our lines and we will be with you in 5 to 10 min.? Why are you on chat tech support with me in the first place, your not supposed be helping anybody else but me at this time. And why would say your gonna take notes and then five min later say an entirely different reason for not interacting with on chat tech support. Livid I end chat and open another, it's Syed again. He apologies for the previous chat ending earlier and asks what the problem is. I'm telling him cant access the Wordpress back end or my main site or my staging sites. He goes off for several minutes "checking" and saying anything back to me after several prompts. This is your chat tech support A2 hosting? And all my tickets from yesterday are still open. Where is your support right now that you promise on your website? And where is the technically knowledgeable professional tech support? Completely blown away by this completely non existent useless 3 grade support period. I can only imagine if the hosting went down again or some complicated major issue were to happen I would be screaming out of frustration. If anything like this happens again I would be taking my frustrations out on every review site (and whatnot else venue) give the full details on this less than crap so called support. My client's business does over 100 mil in managed assets and to have his website hosted on a place where this occurs is in no way acceptable or viable. Unfortunately we have a years hosting. We have not even been with you guys for a month. If this happens in the near future we will be demanding our money back and switch hosting ASAP! Remarkable you even have this level of low quality tech support. There was absolutely nothing in my experience that could convince me that this Syed guy was remotely technical or customer service competent. I did customer service for five years, yeah I know. Get it together A2 before we leave!!
